Last month I wrote about my first MAC purchase, a lipstick in the shade Spirit (here). I really loved it so I knew it wouldn’t be long before I bought another one. I was having a browse on the Debenhams website when I noticed they had 10% off beauty (they seem to do this quite often). How could I resist having a quick look at MAC? I obviously went straight to the lipstick section and after seeing that Velvet Teddy was in stock it took me about 10 seconds to press buy! So I think everyone has heard about this shade because it has been heavily linked with Kylie Jenner and those lips, but I thought I would do my own review and give my opinion on whether it is worth the hype.
The shade Velvet Teddy is described by MAC as a “deep toned beige”. I think this is accurate, you can see the shade swatched on my hand in the photo above. The lipstick does look different on different people, for example on me it looks almost like a peachy-brown (see photo below). I noticed that the colour on the lips looks similar to the Maybelline Velvet Lip Pencil in Nude Perfection (I have reviewed this here).
The formula of Velvet Teddy is matte, but it isn’t really drying and can be worn comfortably. I think I still prefer the Satin MAC finish, but it really depends on personal preference as both are good! The matte finish means the lipstick lasts quite a long time, which is especially good for a nude shade.
As I mentioned in my last MAC review, I like the packaging of these lipsticks. The simple black and silver colour scheme and the secure lid are both great. The only downside is that it is difficult to know which shade you have without turning it upside-down or taking off the lid. This could be annoying if you have a large MAC lipstick collection.
Overall I do like Velvet Teddy. The shade is a nice subtle nude and the matte finish helps achieve the ‘Kylie Jenner’ look. The colour can be worn for a minimal look during the day or paired with dramatic eye makeup for the night. So… is it worth the hype? I find this difficult to answer because it is a lovely shade that is a great addition to any nude-lover’s collection, but I guess it just didn’t WOW me as much as I expected. So have you tried Velvet Teddy yet? Do you think it is worth the hype? Let me know in the comments below.
