I have always been a loyal pencil eyeliner user. When everyone was telling me to try liquid or gel, saying how much better they were, I would stubbornly defend my trusty pencil. So how was I converted? It wasn’t until a few weeks ago, when I was at Glastonbury Festival. My pencil got too warm in my tent, the top snapped off and it wouldn’t sharpen… Enter my sister’s gel eyeliner… She had been going on about it since she got it and I didn’t really listen to her, but my pencil was broken so I had no choice but to try it. I was so surprised at how easy it was to use. For some reason I thought that gel was the most difficult form of eyeliner to apply. Not true. It was actually much easier to get a thin line and my usual “cat-eye flick” looked more refined. Needless to say, as soon as I got home I took a trip to Superdrug and got my hands on my own gel eyeliner.
The one that I chose was Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner. It comes with a small pot of eyeliner and a double sided brush, one side to apply and the other to smudge (if desired). So far I have no complaints, it seems to last well all day and gives an opaque black line. The picture below shows the eyeliner after 5 hours wear. (Please ignore my eyebrows, I really need to get them done).
To create the eyeliner look above, gel is so much better than pencil. I can’t believe I used pencil for so long! The problem with a pencil is that unless it’s very sharp it’s difficult to make the flick part look right. I’m sure for other eyeliner looks pencil is great, but because I have my eye make up like this every day, gel saves me so much time as I don’t need to use a sharpener.
So have you tried gel eyeliner? Do you prefer pencil, liquid or gel eyeliner? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
The Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner costs £7.99 and can be bought in Boots.
