Why I Am A Gel Eyeliner Convert

Maybelline Gel Eyeliner- Why I am converted to gel eyeliner

I have always been a loyal pencil eyeliner user. When everyone was telling me to try liquid or gel, saying how much better they were, I would stubbornly defend my trusty pencil. So how was I converted? It wasn’t until a few weeks ago, when I was at Glastonbury Festival. My pencil got too warm in my tent, the top snapped off and it wouldn’t sharpen… Enter my sister’s gel eyeliner… She had been going on about it since she got it and I didn’t really listen to her, but my pencil was broken so I had no choice but to try it. I was so surprised at how easy it was to use. For some reason I thought that gel was the most difficult form of eyeliner to apply. Not true. It was actually much easier to get a thin line and my usual “cat-eye flick” looked more refined. Needless to say, as soon as I got home I took a trip to Superdrug and got my hands on my own gel eyeliner.

The one that I chose was Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner. It comes with a small pot of eyeliner and a double sided brush, one side to apply and the other to smudge (if desired). So far I have no complaints, it seems to last well all day and gives an opaque black line. The picture below shows the eyeliner after 5 hours wear. (Please ignore my eyebrows, I really need to get them done).

Gel eyeliner flick- Why I am converted to gel eyeliner

To create the eyeliner look above, gel is so much better than pencil. I can’t believe I used pencil for so long! The problem with a pencil is that unless it’s very sharp it’s difficult to make the flick part look right. I’m sure for other eyeliner looks pencil is great, but because I have my eye make up like this every day, gel saves me so much time as I don’t need to use a sharpener.

So have you tried gel eyeliner? Do you prefer pencil, liquid or gel eyeliner? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner costs £7.99 and can be bought in Boots.

I love gel eyeliner! I use the collection one though it does smudge quite a lot!

    Kimberley xx

    • Ah this is the only gel eyeliner I’ve tried, luckily so far it hasn’t smudged! xx

  • I converted from liquid to gel when my last liquid eyeliner ran out… never going back! Gel lasts so much longer and like you say it gives a sharper line.

    • I know! I never really considered it before, but I can’t see myself using anything else now. xx

  • I’ve never tried gel eyeliner before , I also think it is the most difficult to use now I’m not sure . Maybe I will give that a try

    • I would definitely recommend it and I didn’t find it hard to use at all. xx

  • I was once like you, always using a oencil because I thought a liquid or gel would be too difficult for me to apply. I’ve been using felt tip liners for a while now because the whole winged-eyeliner trend has been going on and I really like using them. I never tried an actual pot of gel eyeliner though. I really want to tey that Maybelline one but never have I been brave enough 😉

    Thanks for this lovely post!

I absolutely adore gel liner, especially Sleek’s ink pot!

    • Ooh thanks for the recommendation, maybe I’ll try that one after I’ve finished the Maybelline one. xx

  • I use pencil liner on waterline and tightline but liquid liner for the actual liner on my lid as gel liner melts off xx

    • Ah ok, luckily I haven’t had that problem so far! I can see how pencil would be good for the waterline 🙂 xx

  • I prefer gel too, i find I can get such a sharper line!

    • I totally agree, it is so much easier to get a sharp line! xx

  • I love using liquid and I’m just a newbie to gel! This Maybelline gel eyeliner does sound promising xx

    • Ah I don’t have that much experience with liquid eyeliner! I am happy with it so far 🙂 xx

Thanks for your link in the #fbl twitter chat!
I’ve used all three, and have to say I prefer liquid eyeliner. I have used this one before but find it can fade quite easily throughout the day, so that puts me off a little.

    • Oh that’s interesting! I haven’t had a problem with it fading so far, but I guess some products work for some people and not others. xx

  • I swear by gel liners. They’re so much more pigmented and longer lasting… and easier to get the flick too! I’m currently using L’Oreal Gel Liner however I’ve used Maybelline’s in the past which is also lovely to use!

    • I completely agree, it is so much easier to get the flick! Oh ok, I will definitely look at that one when mine runs out xx

  • Lottie Dainton

Wow looks so good! I’m definitely going to try it.

  • Francesca

I’ve never tried gel liner! I’m using a liquid girl, I will be giving this a go!

I have the same eyeliner but I am so bad at applying it! You did an amazing job!

  • Tanzina

I’ve tried gel liner and for a while I really liked it.. but I keep going back to my liquid liner as I feel the edges are sharper, the colour is more truer and darker.. and every time nowadays that I do use gel eyeliner I end up going over it qith liquid liner which sort of defeats the purpose!

But this post is tempting me to give it another go..

    • Yeah I agree with you liquid is more of a statement I think because the colour is darker. Haha that’s funny, it does defeat the purpose a bit! xx
