How Long Does It Take To Write A Blog Post?

Time Taken To Write a Blog Post

When I was writing my last post ( My Daily Makeup Products + Total Cost) I thought it might be interesting to time myself and see how long it actually took to write the whole post. I don’t think many non-bloggers realise how much time blogging can take up. Everything from taking photos, to writing and editing, can be time consuming. So here’s a quick break down of how long everything took:

Taking Photos- 25 Minutes

For the post I took the photo on my iPhone 5. I usually use a digital camera, but as I only had one photo to take I used my phone. This actually seems quite a long time to take one photo, but the lighting wasn’t great and I tried quite a few different layouts. I think in the future I’m going to take bulk photos to save time.

Editing Photos- 30 Minutes

I’m really not the best at editing photos, but I think they look better edited than the original shot. I use PicMonkey to edit my photos. I usually adjust the brightness and highlights as well as the contrast. You can see the results below:

How long does it take to write a blog post?Editing always takes me a while, especially if I have more than one photo in a post. I’d love to be able to do this quicker!

Writing The Post- 1 hour 35 minutes

Looking at the post I can’t believe it took me so long to write, but there are a lot of links, which take some time to add. I also had to find the prices for all the products and to be honest I am quite a slow writer! The time does include proofreading and spellchecking, as well as smaller things like adding tags.

Total Time Taken- 2 Hours 30 Minutes

That’s the time taken to write the whole post, but it doesn’t include any promotion, like posting on Twitter. The post was probably one of the quicker posts to write, due to only having one photo to take and edit. How long does it take you to write a post? Do you have any tips on writing a post more quickly?

  • Wow, I feel pretty slow compared to you! haha. I still quite new to blogging, so I’m sure I’ll gain speed over time once I figure out my preferred methods of editing, photographing, and such. For me, my fashion posts and reviews take the most time. Fashion posts take quite a bit of time planning outfits, changing clothes and accessories, changing up hair styles, and touching up makeup. As for product reviews, the time you spend using the product for days (or even weeks) beforehand take into account as well!

Even though blogging takes a lot of time for the little amount of time for others to read, I still very much enjoy doing it! 🙂 Great post!

    • Thank you for the comment! I can imagine fashion posts take a long time! I forgot about the time spent actually using the product you’re reviewing.

It takes me ages to write my posts too. I can be quite an indecisive person especially when it comes to pictures and where I’m going to put them.

    • Yes I’m the same, I’ll edit one, decide I don’t like it and start again.

It takes me so long to start & finish 1 blog because I’m such a perfectionist. It has to be right before I can publish it & even now I go back and still think I could have made them look better, I’m never satisfied. I’m so bad! Haha.

  • Loved this post! It takes me ages to finish a post because I just write it paragraph by paragraph so if I have a bit of time before bed I’ll write a bit and then finish it off the next day. I also like to take my time with photos because I think that’s what makes the blog post really come alive! The app I use for editing is ‘Fotor’ I think you can use it online or download it for free from the app store. Sometimes I plan my blog posts at take loads of photos in one go which can come as a big help if I have a busy week ahead. I definitely agree with you links take absolutely forever, especially if they don’t have it online because I like to find products that are similar to what I bought.

    • Thanks for the app recommendation, I’m always looking to make my photos look better. I definitely need to start taking photos in bulk!
